14th International Multimedial Art Festival - IMAF 2012

Picture
Nenad Bogdanovic:
This year IMAF festival has been held in Odzaci, at MAS Gallery, and in Novi Sad, at SULUV Gallery (Association of Fine Artists of Vojvodina). We had the  honor for the 14th International multimedia art festival to be opened by Shaun Caton, artist from Great Britain. As a performer returning to IMAF for the second year, Shaun expressed high opinions about the mission and importance of IMAF.
After the opening we had scheduled video presentation by Robert Pugh, artist from Great Britain. Robert presented his video compilations of the recordings of earlier performances by Shaun Caton. Same video program was presented again at SULUV in Novi Sad.
First live performance, in Odzaci, was presented by Kjetil Skoeien from Norway. Performance „Still nature“, with previously prepared video background, represents an assembly of readymade objects from immediate surroundings. Center of the performance directs towards contemplation about social moment of the individual, burdened by the norms of the society and seeking ways toward overcoming them. In Novi Sad, at SULUV Gallery, Kjetil performed „Take a chance on me“. By reciting previously written messages author speaks to lost loves, and the leaves with messages fly to our feet as if those loves were condemned to oblivion.
In the performance „Duration of love“ Nenad Bogdanovic uses simple sound and visual elements to decipher, mysterious to him, idea of love. By continuous writing of the word „love“, using red paint on white soap, and playing with it in the water that erases the word, he poses a question about this global human phenomenon. At SULUV Gallery, with performance „In love I trust“ Nenad continues his cycle of performances about love. This time with a hint of irony, connecting love with money like it is quite often in life itself.
“Meander cult” performances by Shaun Caton in Odzaci and Novi Sad are the reflection of his obsession by rivers and archeological findings. Life force that carries mysterious things, unveils deposits of forgotten memories, lost ancient objects or long discarded stuff. In the first one he plays with the shadows of strange animals in dark world of complicated actions and images, gestures... Jar with the fetus in the water where the author gives life by his breath adds a bit of fright to this natural phenomenon.
In her performance “Stigma Exorcism” Jessica Hirst invites the audience to use her naked body as a canvas to write words, personal characteristics for which she was, could have been or would have been, stigmatized at a certain point of time or space. Words like “raped”, “Jewish”, “mentally ill”, “rich”, “left-handed”, etc. Unable to cover all the words by hands or feet, Jessica covers herself wit flower, sugar , eggs... thus hiding her stigmas without success. She offers a piece of cake to each member of the audience, although most of them had no “appetite” for it. In Novi Sad performance “All the pills” Jessica shares her unpleasant experience of medicament misuse during her life. Audience enjoyed placing their hands into a bucket full of pills thus experiencing vast amount of medicaments used.
“Cold hands, warm heart” was a performance presented by artistic couple Rebecca Weeks &  Ian Whitford. Rebecca sits in one corner of the gallery, dressed in white wedding gown, holding an icicle of frozen wine shaped like a hand in her lap. In the opposite corner formally dressed Ian, surrounded by photocopies of documents and his portrait, shreds them in a cutting machine occasionally drinking the wine. After a bit of time, when the wine in her hands has melted Rebecca leaves with Ian to the street, leaving for their hotel. In this performance, much like in “Home is where the heart is” in Novi Sad, authors are exposing secrets of male-female relations. Their communication and relations that are reflecting their emotional and sexual relationship.
National anthem was heard in SULUV Gallery, there was a national flag of Serbia on the floor surrounded by candles, and a performance “Only Serbia” by Marko Bogdanovic. Author cuts the national crest from the flag, puts them on sliced bread and there are rich sandwiches. He ate several of them, and shared some with the audience. Very sharp criticism of the former and actual government for the decades of social problems in the country. This performance leaves no room to doubts about his ideas and standings.
Radoslav B. Chugaly in his performance “Bread and games”, at SULUV Gallery, plays a double role in a game of chess, replaying the famous Kasparov’s game against the IBM computer. In this performance Radoslav the Artist plays against Radoslav BA/MA of economics. Another segment of importance was the fact that Radoslav changed his shirt from plain black of the Economist to bright yellow for the Artist with the words „Stop pedophilia“ printed on it.
In order for the IMAF to be held for the 14th time, help has been received and recognized from Ministry of culture and information of Republic of Serbia, Independent cultural scene Association of Serbia, Swiss West Balkans cultural program and Fund for an open society of Serbia.

U Novom Sadu u galeriji SULUV Kjetil je izveo performans “Isprobaj me”.
U prvom igra senki čudnih životinja u mračnom svetu komplikovanih životnih akcija i slika, gestova...
U suprotnom uglu Ian u svečanom odelu, okruženog fotokopijama dokumenata i fotokopijama njegovog portreta, uništava papire na šreder mašini i povremeno ispija vino.
Radoslav B. Čugalj u performansu “Hleba i igara”, u galeriji SULUV, igra dvostruku ulogu u partiji šaha.

Shaun Caton
Shaun Caton (UK) has presented over 250 performances in many galleries, museums and festivals worldwide since 1985. He calls his performances ‘living breathing images’ and often paints/draws in a self induced trance state during performances.  Paintings serve as metaphysical maps or links between objects and materials – all of which have the strange potential for transformation through repetition and variation rituals. His work has been recently described as ‘ epic primordial performance and shamanic scribbles…’(TACTILEbosch 2007) and‘genuinely terrifying’ (The Scotsman 2009).

Jessica Hirst
Born United States, 1971
Divides her time among Barcelona, San Diego and DC
As opposed to a struggling artist, I am an artist who struggles. I struggle mostly with the depression associated with bipolar disorder (Type II) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but also with art's power, or lack thereof, or appropriateness thereof, to intervene in questions of justice in the world. I make performances, videos, installations and objects. I make metaphoric crumple zones, the parts of a car’s body designed to absorb the massive energy caused by the impact of a crash. Like the engineering of a crumple zone, my works create a space to observe controlled deformation, rather than merely succumb to chaotic destruction. They explore ways to redirect and absorb the forces that threaten to crush us. Part of the difficulty in recovering from trauma is accepting the lack of agency one had during and after the traumatic experience. I deliberately plan and perform “accidents” in which no one is hurt and nothing terrible happens - my actions are no longer accidents, no longer completely beyond my control. I regain the ability to think, to shape events. The outcome is cathartic rather than traumatic, life-affirming rather than tragic. I am interested in how human actions on objects - breaking, throwing, dumping, swallowing, smashing - represent how we treat ourselves internally and how we treat one another. I am interested in how institutional text can be useful and also dehumanizing. palmerfishmanindustries.blogspot.com

Robert Pugh
Having graduated from Cardiff School of Art & Design in 2009 I was producing large scale mixed media installation pieces, more specifically my work involved the use of super 8mm film and deconstructing their projectors to bare skeletal form and degrading the super 8mm film by constantly playing the film until it's breaking point. My degree show piece was near expelled from the degree show on account of health and safety, however I was fortunate enough to be working with artist and curator Kim Fielding of tactileBosch Studio and gallery, Cardiff. Where I was able to further develop my installation and film on a larger scale as well as being able to exhibit the piece as it was intended.
Whilst working  with tactileBocsh I had the privilege of documenting many live performances, openings and producing video art works within the gallery. In November 2009 I was introduced to Shaun Caton and Brownsierra, this would be the first time that I was able to document Shaun's performances and led to the production of my first film for Shaun 'Eldritch Thrall'.
Having built up a good working relationship with Shaun I was asked to document a second event at the 2010 N.R.L.A in Glasgow where I was able to exhibit the first film 'Eldritch Thrall' as well having the opportunity to later shoot several more films. Shauns performances are durational and evolve with time through drawing, painting, movement, repeated processes, light and sound therefore it is crucial that the films display the progression of each piece.  It is important that the films act as documentation of the event as well as showing a brief insight into the atmosphere of each performance. Only minor changes are made to the audio and visual of the films, everything else is done in camera so arguably the films also evolve throughout the performance in the hope to produce something totally unique.

Rebecca Weeks & Ian Whitford
Rebecca Weeks and Ian Whitford have been working together since 2004. First as ‘ArtDept’ making live art, video, installation and performance. Writing in order to usurp and parody the institutional and bureaucratic. Aparatus of power, to redirect systems and structures and to question their validity. In 2010 they began to work as ‘Weeks and Whitford’ making performance and writing in order to more directly address the boundaries between
life, experience and art. They began working to confront their own social and emotional limits and the limits of others, to allow themselves to be vulnerable, to fail, to not offer answers, to not entertain, and to achieve a disintegration within performance in order for meaning to come through from beyond rationality, from where words run out. Weeks and Whitford utilise low and high cultural forms, images and significations, borrowing from diverse figures such as the stand up comedian, the clown, the tour guide, the pin up, and the lecturer. Influenced
by literature, visual art, philosophy, performance, horror, porn and punk they blur the boundaries of performance art and common culture, theatre, academia, the private and the personal, art and life. Their work touches upon issues of class, gender, sexuality and marginalised identity both in terms of modes of expression and in terms of the content of works. They work in galleries, and often in non art specific contexts. Recent highlights include ‘Transition’, The Exchange Gallery, Penzance, November 2011, ‘British Art Show Fringe’, Theatre Royal, Plymouth, November, 2011, ‘Site Festival’, Stroud Valley Arts, Stroud, June 2011, On Site/Off Site, Stroud, June 2011, ‘The Supper Club’, The Basement Brighton, December 2010. They are co – founders and co - directors with Andy Whall of Cornwall Autonomous Zone, an independent artist led project space/network. CAZ was founded in 2010 and is focused on supporting local emergent artists, performance, installation, video, art writing and research.
