10th International Multimedial Art Festival - IMAF 2008

This year International multimedial art festival - IMAF has been organized for the 10th time. What is there to say after ten years of struggle against various problems, more or less mostly bound to financial difficulties, following the festival since 1998. Certain institutions for culture and art on the level of state and province, down to local community, were not able,or perhaps didn't want to, recognize importance and particularity of IMAF on domestic andinternational art scene. Much better solution is to remember many artists who participated before and in this jubilee year. Artists who raised IMAF on a very high place of artistic manifestations of international scene with their engagement. During the first year we have been visited by Hero Itoh from Japan and Balint Szombathy from our country. Next years gave us opportunity to welcome artists like: Uto Gusztav from Romania, Jasunori Shiobara from Japan, Jorg Koppl and Peter Zacek from Switzerland and Kenny McBride from Scotland. Unforgettable was also the meeting of artists on river Danube during 2003. with following artists: Angel Pastor from Spain, Roddy Hunter from Scotland, Yu Kuramoto from Japan, Justin McKeown from Great Britain, Era Milivojevic, Radoslav B. Chugaly and Aleksandar Jovanovic from Serbia and Sinead O`Donnell from Ireland. IMAF 2004. was magnificent with yet another count of artists: Ryosuke Cohen from Japan, Nicola Frangione and Emilio Morandi from Italy, Andre Stitt from Great Britain, Martin Zet from Czech Republic, Hugh O`Donnell from Northern Ireland and Milan Grahovac from Serbia. Between 2005. and 2007. we had more important artist for the first time on IMAF: Phil Babot from Great Britain, Vassya Vassileva from Bulgaria, Peter Kuestermann from Germany, Adina Baron from Israel, Marilyn Arsem from USA, Jozsef Juhasz from Slovakia, Joan Casellas from Spain, MP and Art Circus groups from Serbia, Joseph Ravens, Juniper Perlis and Gertrude Berg from USA and Nela Antonovic from Serbia. Then followed more well known artists: Alastair Maclennan and Brian Connolly from Northern Ireland, John G. Boehme and Martine Viale from Canada, Gabrijel Savic from Serbia and Tamar Raban from Israel. More artists that I haven't mentioned have passed through open doors of IMAF realizing their important in live art projects. Alongside many artists that presented their performances and different art projects live on IMAF, during the festivals was also presented a certain number of group art projects and exhibitions, with several hundreds of participants worldwide: „Man gallery" (1998), „Performance - interventions on photos" (2000.), „Photo boot performances" (2001.), „Performance art today" (2002.), „Nature of performance - performance in nature" (2003.), „Future of art performance" (2004.), „Ab Ovo" (2005.), „(In)Place of fear" (2006.). There should be mentioned that, during last years, Multimedial Art Studio enabled people from Novi Sad (last 3 years in Independent Art Association IZBA), and from Belgrade (Students Cultural Centre from 2005 to 2007) to follow the programme of IMAF in their cities besides Odzaci - the home place of IMAF.
After the opening of the 10th IMAF, at MAS Gallery and on the first day in IZBA Novi Sad, we organized video presentation of six artists from various countries. Videos presented works of: Lidija Antonovic (Serbia) - „Action" and „Liberty Square", Shosh Israeli Grosz (Israel) ‐ „Stinky Beauty" and „Lovely Murder". For Marko Bogdanovic (Serbia) we presented video documentation of performance „N.W.O - 01" he performed in SULUV Gallery of Novi Sad during Museum Night 2008. We also presented Emilio and Franca Morandi with their video of „Immediately Here", they performed in Center for modern art in Madrid during 2006. Another artist was presented with his earlier work. Fiona McGregor from Australia was presented with video of her work „Dead Art" she performed without announcement and followed with police intervention in Museum of modern art in Sidney.
Joan Casellas from Spain made an interactive performance „‐ action based on specific place and memories of the past" at MAS Gallery on the first day. As opposed to his participation two years ago, Joan presents himself as „more modern man"ironicaly pointing that he now has cell phone and digital photo camera. Leisurely and directly talking with selected in Spain, then animates the audience documenting each gesture with photo camera, while the voice from background „marks" each ten minutes of the 60 minutes duration of the performance. On the second day, in the MAS Gallery yard, Joan realized short performance titled „Ten times ten second, ten times". During the performance author condenses space and time creating a sort of „mental installation". Third Joan's performance, on this IMAF, took place inside IZBA Novi Sad. In the first part of the work Joan repeats interactive communication with the audience. Then he rearranges an object (a table), from one place to another, with the aid of selected audience. Then while „hiding" under the table, he mimics dog barking „responded" by a local stray dog outside of the gallery.
Within this IMAF Multimedial Art Studio organized an exhibition of Angel Pastor's (Spain) work „Walking tree". Angel started this project five years earlier, also during IMAF, in natural surroundings of Danube River. At that time author designed T‐shirts and distributed them to the audience, and continued to „walk" like a „walking tree" all over the world, making photos of himself with motive of the „walking tree". Angel collected all those sites and exhibited them in MAS Gallery. This time he also prepared new T‐shirts selling them to the audience for a symbolic fee, inviting them to, during next five years, take photos of themselves and send them to him to make a new exhibition. After opening the exhibition and promoting the „Walking tree" project, Angel made another „Walking tree 2008" performance to continue his tale of a walking tree. First he installed 11 wooden cubes of the same size with letters written on each side of the cubes. Author turned the cubes and the audience could read: Performance, Walking tree, Angel Pastor. After that Angel, holding the branches in his hands, definitely equaled himself with a tree, symbol of survival of life on planet Earth. During his performance in Novi Sad „Disturbances/Walking tree", in IZBA, Angel projects an animation combined with a video of performance in Odzaci. Central figure is Angel in action with branches and behind him is large tree still living and defying all weather and current troubles.
Performance „Virus" was made by Dragan Vojvodic in the yard of MAS Gallery. In it author uses illustrated weekly magazine about life of „celebrities" whose leaves he places on the ground taping together with adhesive tape. Then he takes already prepared bicycle with installed bottle with white paint. Driving the bicycle across the „carpet" made of magazines, white paint dripping on the wheel and placing the trail after it. Circling on this colorful space after a period makes characters and themes, without any connection with needs and interests of average intellectuals, completely white. Creative artistic action of Dragan Vojvodic nullifies activities of aggressive consumer society, leaving white space as impulse for the more creative expression of future generations. Dragan Vojvodic represented himself at IZBA with performance titled "Territories". Basic material for this performance is red paint. During this action he paints books in red and throws them around dedicated space covered with plastic foil. At the end he paints a table, a chair, himself and the space of performance. Sits in the middle by the piled, red‐painted things and materials, and with the help of the audience, everything together with the artist becomes packaged together.
Malgosia Butterwick from Poland realised two performances, one in Odzaci and one in Novi Sad, titled „SEDU/a/CTION". Standing on chairs, at MAS Gallery, goes through the pages of the children`s book reading the text in Serbian language that didn`t sound understandable - just like a child that is learning to read, and then reads from „Critical theory of performance". Just like the children`s book, goes through the pages of the „serious" literature about conceptual art blowing her breath on the pages. From the first book she blew out confetti, and from another yellow tree leaves which made it look like to content is falling out of the books. Before reading the book about performances she placed huge red plastic lips on her own making this reading also non‐understandable. Same performance she made at IZBA, with certain changes, using random book from the library of this Independent Asociation. Malgosia points us to think harder, and with a lot of irony in her IMAF performances equalises writing for children with theoretical text describing contemporary art movements in the world.
Nieves Correa from Spain introduced herself in Odzaci with „Bigraphy III" performance. Nieves starts her biography with circular cutting of her black dress with scissors. This makes her „biography" naked together with the naked artist. Then she takes the next step by sewing the dress from her bare brests downward. At the end Nieves fixes her „bigraphy" completing the performance as she started - dressed in a newly tailored evening dress. At Novi Sad Gallery Nieves continues representing her biographies. In her „Biography IV" the artist, in IZBA space, makes a circle of plastic cups on the floor. Using one cup of water she fills the first cup, then using this cup fills the next and so on. As times goes by, her concentration fades and she looses water on the floor leaving her without any water. She walks in circles arround the cups, eating some snacks and droping it from her mouth on the floor. Then she sits on a chair, in the middle of the circle, taking her left and right shoe on and of in turns. At the end, she walks arround the Gallery, blowing in an unindentifiable object and smashes it in the midlle of the circle with a loud scream. Entire performance has metronome sound in the background, like time pendulum, reminding us that everything is ephemeral and we only leave biographies behind.
Radoslav B. Chugaly from Serbia performed „Transition" at IZBA in Novi Sad. Radoslav places cups on a table, covered with white canvas, and fills them with different color pigments. Then pours some water in each cup to fill it up, forcing the colored liquid to overflow and paint the space on the canvas. In the middle is a cup with red color which he uses at the end spilling bright red fluid all over the canvas. Radoslav uses different colors to simbolize all differences and problems facing nations and states going through transition of post‐communist government towards a better tomorrow.
In my performace „Prologue", that I (Nenad Bogdanovic, Serbia) made at IZBA, I`m sitting at the table cutting onions with a knife to very small pieces. On another half of the table there is a large political map of the world, where I placed a large onion on each continent. Video camera is pointed to the map all the time, and the events are projected directly to one of the walls. During this long term onion cutting, the vapours force the tears to my eyes. With such crying eyes, I finish cutting the onions and use it to write a single word WARS, along the world map. This tenth edition of International Performance Art Festival - IMAF justifies its long existence in this space with the quality of art creations offered. Tenth jubilee festival offered the audience in Odzaci and Novi Sad, during four days of it, 13 performances live, several documented videos of performances and several video works.
IMAF Festival, like so many years already, represented a certain number of extremely current art projects of domestic and international art scene.
